Australian Citizenship
Obtaining Australian citizenship is a status that gives individuals certain rights and privileges, such as the right to vote, access to Higher Educational student loans, and the ability to obtain an Australian passport. There are several ways to become an Australian citizen, including through birth, descent, or conferral.
The common eligibility criteria for Australian Citizenship
Residency
You must be a permanent resident of Australia and have lived in Australia for at least four years (1460 days) immediately before applying for citizenship. You must also have been physically present in Australia and hold permanent residency for at least 12 months (365 days) out of the four years.
Character
You must be of good character, which means you must not have a substantial criminal record or have been involved in any activities that are not in the best interest of Australia.
Language
You must be able to speak and understand basic English. This means that you should be able to hold a conversation, understand simple instructions, and read basic signs and documents.
Knowledge of Australia
You must have a basic knowledge of Australia, including its history, values, and cultural traditions. This is assessed through the Australian Citizenship Test, which is a computer-based test that assesses your knowledge of Australia.
Intention to live in Australia
You must intend to live in Australia or maintain a close and continuing association with Australia. This means that you should not have any plans to leave Australia or to live outside of Australia for extended periods of time.
