The Australian Partner visa is for individuals who are in a committed relationship with an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. This visa allows the partner of the Australian sponsor to live in Australia temporarily and eventually become a permanent resident if the relationship continues to be genuine and ongoing.

The types of Australian Partner visas:

Onshore Partner Visa

Partner Subclass 820/801

A temporary / permanent visa for partner of Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who are in Australia

Offshore Partner Visa

Partner Subclass 309/100

A temporary/ Permanent visa for partner of Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who are outside Australia.

Prospective Marriage Subclass 300

A temporary visa for individuals who are engaged to an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who are outside Australia.

The Partner visa combines a temporary and a permanent visa into one application. The temporary visa is granted first, allowing the partner to live in Australia for a specified period of time (usually 2 years). After the couple has been in a genuine relationship for at least 2 years, the permanent visa can be granted.

The common criteria for Australian Partner visas

Genuine relationship

Must be in a committed relationship with the sponsor for at least 12 months.

Eligible sponsor

The sponsor must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Health and character

Must meet health and character requirements.

Proof of relationship

Provide evidence of the genuine and ongoing nature of the relationship.

No debts to the Australian government

Must not have any outstanding debts to the Australian government.
